I often recommend faster walking speeds (at least 2 meters per second) for my patients that suffer with chronic disc and other sources of recurrent lower back pain. Faster walking speeds are thought to be more beneficial for back troubles than slow because of several factors.

As arm swing increases with greater walking speeds, stressful loads on the lower back decease as a result of more elastic movement with less back muscle contraction. Fast walking and slow running may provide a growth and healing stimulus for discs, as long term running and jogging in middle aged men and women has been associated with greater disc health in several studies. While running and jogging can aggravate some cases of low back pain due to increased compression and jarring forces, fast walking may provide similar benefits without the risks, as fast walking has been shown to be a positive factor in the successful recovery of lower back troubles.

Fast Walking Better Than Slow for Back Pain

When fast walking is combined with custom walking modifications to improve body mechanics, spine stabilization and back fitness, I have found the results improve dramatically.
